Roads Scholar #14: Bridge Maintenance and Repair

Louisiana is home to hundreds of locally owned bridges that require consistent maintenance and timely repairs to stay safe and operational. Unfortunately, many commercial and in-house repairs fail to meet acceptable standards—sometimes even making future inspections more difficult or compromising the structure.
This course provides an in-depth overview of preventive maintenance techniques and basic repairs for key bridge elements, including the deck, superstructure, substructure, approach, railing, joints, seats, caps, and pilings. It incorporates Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) guidance and encourages all bridge owners to follow best practices that support long-term bridge health and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) compliance.

					Topics Covered:

  - Identifying bridge types and components

  - Developing programs for routine, preventive, and proactive maintenance

  - Incorporating maintenance into agency work plans and budgets

  - Recognizing signs of deterioration that could lead to load restrictions or closures

  - Selecting and implementing cost-effective repairs that follow DOTD best practices

  - Maintaining other critical features such as waterways, approach roadways, and safety appurtenances

This course is ideal for public agencies, local governments, and maintenance crews responsible for bridge upkeep.
